Mid-week, Papa Rock was ready for his Saturday retirement party.

The iconic Pensacola disc jockey was excited to celebrate his 62 years in broadcasting with his radio family from Magic 106.1 and fans from his decades in radio with WBOP.

He got a haircut Wednesday and told his friend and fellow broadcaster, Sonshine, that he wanted to go on the air during the Saturday morning celebration.

"He told me 'I want you to be there with me in case I'm not strong enough,''' Sonshine said. "But he wanted to do it."

But Papa Rock, who was already battling illnesses, would not make his party. His health deteriorated and by Friday, when Sonshine visited his home, he was semi-conscious and "he didn't even know who I was,'' she said.
